What to tell your mechanic about a car fault

You do not need to diagnose your car before contacting a garage. A clear description of what you have noticed is much more useful than guessing which part needs replacing.

Explain what happens, in your own words

Describe the change: a noise, vibration, warning message, smell or difference in the way the car drives. Tell us when you first noticed it and whether it happens every time. If there is a dashboard message, copy the wording or take a photo while parked safely.

Note when it happens

The circumstances can help a technician narrow down an intermittent problem. A fault on a cold start may need different checks from one that only appears after a longer journey.

  • Does it happen when the engine is cold or warm?
  • Is it linked to braking, turning, accelerating or changing gear?
  • Does it appear after the car has been parked for a while?
  • Has it become more frequent or changed over time?

Mention recent work and changes

Tell the garage about recent servicing, repairs, battery replacement or fitted accessories. Include your registration, mileage if known, and any useful service or MOT notes. Keep diagnostic reports or warning messages available rather than relying on memory.

Agree how the car will reach the workshop

If braking or steering feels compromised, the car is overheating or the handbook tells you to stop, do not continue driving to an appointment. Stop safely and arrange suitable assistance. Tell the workshop whether the car is drivable before organising a visit.

Describe the issue in our quote form or call the workshop. We will discuss the appropriate inspection and the next step.
